Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Vayigash

Parsha 11

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Genesis 44:1847:27 it is called Va’yigash which means “then he drew near” Judah pleaded desperately with Joseph, explaining that their father would die of heartbreak if Benjamin did not return. Judah begged Joseph to allow Benjamin to go free and take Judah in his place. Jacob was overcome by emotions and ordered everyone but his brothers to leave the room. Joseph then burst into tears and explained that he was Joseph their brother. It was beyond a hallmark moment. In recounting the story Joseph explained it was all God’s orchestration to use Joseph to save everyone. His dreams had come true. The whole family moved to Egypt. Jacob was reunited with Joseph. upon arrival to Egypt Pharaoh gave them the best land. They became keepers of the herds of Egypt. Jacob met Pharaoh and blessed him. While the famine was still in full swing Joseph was able to purchase all the land, cattle, and bond servants of Egypt for the pharaoh. Israel lived in Egypt, in the land of Goshen, accumulated possessions, and was fruitful and multiplied. And that is Va’yigash in 60 seconds.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Miketz

Parsha 10

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Genesis 41:1–44:17 it is called Miketz which means “at the end” Pharaoh had scary dreams in which seven skinny cows ate seven fat cows and another similar dream involving corn. Pharaoh inquired from all of Egypt’s wise men and magicians to interpret the dream. They Failed! The Butler recalled Joseph and told Pharaoh. Joseph interpreted that there would be seven years of good crops followed by a seven year drought. Pharaoh appointed Joseph as his #2 man in all of Egypt to prepare for these events. When famine struck all people came to Egypt to get food. Ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to Egypt, but Jacob kept Benjamin behind to protect him. Joseph saw them, but they did not recognize Joseph. After many tests of the brothers, which involved lots of free meals, Q&A, crying and imprisonment, Joseph had one final test. Joseph had Benjamin brought to Egypt and as they were preparing to leave Joseph hid a goblet in Benjamin’s bag. As they were departing a Joseph accused them of stealing and found the cup in the bag. Benjamin would be arrested but Judah went to Joseph’s house to save him… And that is Miketz in 60 seconds. Will Judah save his family? Will Benjamin be a slave forever? Tune in next week to see the brother’s fate.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Va’yeishev

Parsha 9

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Genesis 37:1–40:23 it is called Va’yeishev which means “and he settled” This is the story of Jacob’s family. Joseph was the favorite son and tattled on his brothers. To make it worst he wore a costume made rainbow coat and had dreams that his brothers metaphorically bowed down to him. The brothers’ were fed up so they ripped off his rainbow coat and Sparta kicked him down a well and sold him into slavery and lied to Jacob that Joseph was eaten by beasts. Jacob was sad. Judah moved out and married the daughter of a Canaanite and had three sons. The oldest married Tamar but God killed him because he was wicked. The second brother was required by law to have children with Tamar but he failed and died. The last brother was up to bat, but Judah was afraid and would not allow Tamar her right. Long story short, Judah “accidently” slept with Tamar and fulfilled her right. She gave birth to Perez Meanwhile Joseph landed a sweet gig with a man named Potiphar but his wife tried to have her way with Joseph and when he refused she accused him of rape and he was sent to prison. While in prison Joseph met the baker and the butler and interpreted their dreams. The baker would die but the butler would live and be restored to his position with Pharaoh. Joseph asked the Butler for a referral when he was restored but the butler forgot. And that is Va’yeishev in 60 seconds.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents

Parsha 8

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Genesis 32:4–36:43 it is called Vayishlach which means “and he sent” As Jacob returned home he sent many gifts ahead of him to butter up Esau, the messenger brought him news that Esau was coming to “meet” him and Jacob was scared. He sent his entire family and everything ahead of him and stayed behind for the night. Cough Coward* That night Jacob literally wrestled with God who dislocated his hip. Jacob would not tap out until God had blessed him. God renamed Jacob Israel, for he had striven with God and with men and prevailed. The next morning Jacob was reunited with Esau and Esau met the whole family. Jacob was in Shechem when his daughter Dinah caught the eye of the prince of the land, who forced himself on her. The prince wanted to marry Dinah but the brothers knew what had happened and told Shechem the prince that all the men must be circumcised. Shechem agreed. On the third day, when the men of the city were in pain, Jacob’s sons Simeon and Levi killed all the men and took Dinah out of the city. God told Jacob to move to Bethel and while there God blessed Jacob who was now called Israel. Soon after, Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin. Reuben lay with Jacob’s concubine, and Israel found out. Jacob reunited with Isaac at Hebron, Isaac died at the old age of 180, and Esau and Jacob buried him. Esau moved away because they both needed more space. And that is Vayishlach in 60 seconds.

Parsha 7

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Va’yeitzi Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Genesis 28:10–32:3 it is called Va’yeitzi which means “and he went out” Jacob was on the run. While using a stone for a pillow, he dreamed a ladder to heaven with angels ascended and descended. God stood beside him and made a promise. Jacob arrived at Haran. When Jacob saw Rachel he chucked a huge stone from the well’s mouth, watered Laban’s sheep, kissed Rachel, wept like a baby, and told her that they were related. Laban welcomed Jacob as family. Laban had two daughters: The elder, Leah, had weak eyes, while the younger, Rachel, was beautiful. Jacob worked seven years to marry Rachel but on their wedding night Laban gave Jacob the slip and gave his older less attractive daughter Leah. Doh! So Jacob worked another seven years and married Rachel as well. Leah was very fertile and Rachel was barren. Many babies and way too much drama later, Jacob was thinking about moving home. Jacob had been scamming Laban in the sheep business and Laban eventually caught on. Jacob tried to leave secretly with all the possessions but was caught. After a long confrontation Laban and Jacob decided to make a covenant not to harm each other. Laban said goodbye, blessed them, and went home. When Jacob left, the angels of God met him. And that is Va’yeitzi in 60 seconds.
