Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Leviticus 14:1–15:33 it is called Metzora which means “one being diseased,” God gave a cleansing ritual for skin disease. It involved two live clean birds, cedar wood, crimson stuff, and hyssop. Eight days later another sacrifice would be made. God explained the ritual for cleansing a house with an eruptive plague. It involved some major remodeling and some birds as well as other things. God gave the ritual for all sorts of male and female cough uncleanliness. Many of these rituals involved a lot of cleaning and clothes washing and a week long process which ends with a sacrifice. Cleanliness was very important to God. God told Moses and Aaron to put the Israelites on guard against uncleanness, lest they die by defiling God’s Tabernacle.

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Leviticus 12:1–13:59 it is called Tazria which means “she conceives,” God tells Moses when a woman has a boy, she is unclean 7 days and must wait 33 days. For a girl double. After her time is complete, she was to bring a sin offering. When a person had a swelling, rash, discoloration, scaly affection, inflammation, or burn, it was to be reported to the priest, who would examine it to determine whether the person was clean or unclean. Unclean persons were to tear their clothes, leave their head bare, cover up their upper lips, declare “Unclean! Unclean!” and chill outside the camp. When clothes got dirty, it was to be shown to the priest, who was to examine to determine whether it was clean or unclean. If unclean, it was to be burnt, but if the there were no stains after a wash, it was to be washed again and be clean. And that is Tazria in 60 seconds.

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Leviticus 9:1–11:47 it is called Shemini which means “eighth,” After ordaining the priests they made sacrifices. Then the Presence of the Lord appeared to all the people and fire consumed the sacrifices. The people were awestruck. Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu decided to improvise and offered unholy fire and God’s fire incinerated them. Their bodies were placed outside the camp. Aaron and his cousins were not to mourn or leave the tent of meeting. God tells Aaron that he and his remaining sons were not to drink wine or other intoxicants when they entered the Tent of Meeting, keeping it holy or they would die. The priests and their families ate their portions from the sacrifice. Moses discovered that Eleazar and Ithamar had already sacrificed and burnt their sin offering and questioned Aaron. Aaron gave an answer which satisfied Moses. And that is Shemini in 60 seconds.

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Leviticus 6.1–8:36 it is called Tzav which means “command,” God tells Moses to command Aaron and the priests about the rituals of the sacrifices The burnt offering must burn until morning, ashes placed outside the camp. The fire was to stay lit. The meal offering were presented before the altar, a portion of it burnt on the altar, and the rest eaten by the priests in the Tent of Meeting. The sin offering was slaughtered, burnt, and eaten in the Tent of Meeting. If blood was sprinkled in the Tent of Meeting for expiation, the entire offering was to be burned on the altar. The guilt offerings were slaughtered, blood dashed, entrails burnt, and meat eaten in the Tent of Meeting. The priest kept the skin. Some sacrifice meat was shared with all priests. The peace offering, if offered for thanksgiving, came with unleavened cakes the meat had to be eaten on the day that it was offered. If offered as a votive or a freewill offering, it could be eaten for two days. Unclean meat was off limits. Fat and blood was off limits. The person offering the peace offering had to present the offering and its fat himself. The whole community gathered at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting for the priests’ ordination. Aaron and his sons were now official priests. To complete their ordination they remained in the tent of meeting for seven days. And that is Tzav in 60 seconds.

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds We have now exited the Exodus and have entered Leviticus Today’s portion is from Leviticus 1:1–5:26 it is called Vayikra which means “and He called” God gave the laws of the sacrifices. Burnt offerings could be bulls, rams or male goats, or turtle doves or pigeons, which the priest burned completely on the altar. Meal offerings were made of flour with oil, from which priest would break a peice to burn on the altar, and the remainder was the priests lunch. When consumed no leaven or honey was used just salt. Strict and very specific protocols were given for meal, well-being, and sin offerings. Which included the burning of various internal organs. Offerings just about everything you could think of included but not limited to a person who: a silent witness, touched any unclean thing, touched human uncleanness, or uttered an oath and forgot. The person had to confess and sacrifice a female sheep or goat. if they could not afford a sheep, two turtledoves or two pigeons and if they can’t afford that they can bring a handful of flour. Basically sacrifice was required for every possible scenario. And that is Vayikra in 60 seconds.
