Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Deuteronomy 3:23–7:11 it is called Va’etchanan which means “and I pleaded,” Moses pleaded with God to let him cross over and see the other side of the Jordan River. God says no and don’t bring it up again. Moses climbs the summit of Pisgah and looks at the land. Moses instructs Joshua to be strong and courageous as he leads the people. Moses tells the Israelites to listen God’s laws, not to add or subtract anything to them. Moses argues that observing the laws faithfully would show the Israelites’ wisdom and discernment and that God is greater than all other nations’ gods. Moses urged the Israelites to not forget the Law, and to make them known to their children and children’s children. God then gives the law of the land. Moses warned them against idolatry and if they failed God would scatter them among the peoples, leaving only a scant few alive. If the Israelites follow God during exile God would bring them back. Moses then preaches about the greatness of God and proves that there are no other gods besides God. Moses then establishes the cities of refuge and gives out the rulebook. Moses then gives another reminder of the law and how it was given by God on mount Horeb and that the covenant was made with each individual and not their fathers. Moses then recalls the 10 commandments and how God inscribed them on two stone tablets, which God gave to Moses. Once again Moses reminds the Israelites to worship only God and to keep the passover. Moses tells the Israelites that God will bring them to the land and will dislodged seven nations before them — the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites We conclude with one final reminder that God is God. And that is Va’etchanan in 60 seconds.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Devarim Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22 it is called Devarim We have now concluded the book Numbers and we must venture into Deuteronomy. 40 years have passed since the Exodus and Moses is giving a big speech. Moses appoints a hierarchy leadership system. The Israelites plan on taking the land and send 12 spies, find giant fruit and giant warriors. Israelites hide in their tents out of fear. God throws down with the Israelites and now nobody except Caleb and Joshua will possess the land. Wandering begins and end when the sinful generation dies. the Israelites met plenty of people along the way. God tells them not to provoke these people or take their land with exception to Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon. While passing through Heshbon peacefully God hardened Sihon’s heart and he attacked and FAILED. King Og head the news and came to fight in Bashan and FAILED. Og was so big that is bedstead was nine cubits long and four cubits wide. The land is then given to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. These tribes were commanded to continue fighting until all the kingdoms west of the Jordan were taken down by God. And that is Devarim in 60 seconds.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Matot Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Numbers 30:2–32:42 it is called Matot which means “tribes,” Vows made to God were required to be completed unless made by a wife or daughter and the husband or father objected to the vow terms. Widowed and divorced women could not take back their vows. God told Moses to attack the Midianites for their deeds in Peor. The Israelites attacked killing every man including five kings and Balaam the prophet. They plundered the Midianites only keeping virgin women alive. Moses directed the troops to stay outside the camp for 7 days and purify everything including themselves. The plunder was divided among the tribes. The troops presented 16,750 shekels of gold for Eleazar and Moses and kept the rest. The Reubenites and the Gadites desired the land on the east side of the Jordan River for their cattle. Moses was concerned that they would not fight for them when they crossed the Jordan and that God would not allow their generation to see the land because of it. They agreed that they would fight until all the land was conquered. Moses agreed The Gadites and Reubenites built cities and some leaders of Manasseh conquered cities and settled there. And that is Matot in 60 seconds.

Moses recorded their journeys from Rameses to Sukkoth to Etham to Pi-hahiroth to Marah to Elim to the Sea of Reeds to the wilderness of Sin to Dophkah to Alush to Rephidim to the wilderness of Sinai to Kibroth-hattaavah to Hazeroth to Rithmah to Rimmon-perez to Libnah to Rissah to Kehelath to Mount Shepher Haradah to Makheloth to Tahath to Terah to Mithkah to Hashmonah to Moseroth to Bene-jaakan to Hor-haggidgad to Jotbath to Abronah to Ezion-geber to Kadesh to Mount Hor. At God’s command, Aaron ascended Mount Hor and died there, at the age of 123 years. They journeyed from Mount Hor to Zalmonah to Punon to Oboth to Iye-abarim to Dibon-gad to Almon-diblathaim to the hills of Abarim to the steppes of Moab. God tells Moses that when they crossed the Jordan into Canaan, they were to destroy everything and take the land and divide it. If they failed the remaining inhabitance would annoy them forever. God then sets the boundaries of the land. God sets up for the city of refuge to be established. The cities of refuge were to serve as places for those who accidently killed someone. They would hide in the cities until their trail date. Many rules were created for these cities. Kinsmen of Zelophehad were concerned that the daughters of Zelophehad would marry outside of their tribe. God instructed the daughters to marry their cousins within their tribe. And that is Masei in 60 seconds.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Pinchas Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Numbers 25:10-30:1 it is called Parashoat Pinchas After the sin of Baal-Peor, God granted Pinchas the pact of friendship and priesthood for all time because of his passion. God tells Moses to attack the Midianites because of their shinanigins with Baal-Peor. God instructs Moses and Eleazar to count all of Israelite men 20 years old and up. The census resulted in a total of 601,730. Moses divides and gives out land portions to all the generation that would not be entering the Promised Land. Caleb and Joshua an all who were younger than one month were not given land. The daughters of Zelophehad request a land holding and God grants it. Moses climbs mount Abarim and sees Israel for the first and last time. Moses appoints Joshua as the new leader. God tells Moses to command the Israelites to be punctilious in presenting the offerings to God. offerings for regular days, the Sabbath, Rosh Chodesh, Passover, Shavuot, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Shmini Atzeret are then instructed in great detail. And that is Pinchas in 60 seconds.

How lovely are your tents, O Ya’akov, your dwelling places, O Yisra’el (Numbers 24:5). Through your abundant kindness I will enter your house, In awe I will bow down toward your Holy Sanctuary. Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Numbers 22:2-25:9 it is called Balak Balak king of Moab contacts the prophet Balaam to come and curse the Israelites. God comes to Balaam and says: “You must not curse that people, for they are blessed.” Balaam says no to Balak. Balak raises to offer. Balaam refuses but God allows Balaam to go with Balak’s men. The next morning Balaam takes his donkey and departed, but God placed an angel in his way. The donkey saw the angel, was scared stiff and pressed Balaam’s foot against the wall. Balaam beat the donkey three times. God allowed the donkey to speak then God allowed Balaam to see the angel, and Balaam bowed down to the ground. The angel questions Balaam and send him with the men instructing him only to speak what God says. Balaam and Balak go to Kiriath-huzoth. In the morning, they went up a mountain overlooking the Israelites. They build seven altars, kill some bulls and rams. Then Balaam went off alone. God appeared and tells Balaam He cannot curse what has been blessed. Balak tries a second mountain and still no curse. Balak then tries a third mountain and Balaam ends up blessing the Israelites. Balak fires Balaam for incompetence and Balaam goes home. Meanwhile the Israelites partied with the Moabite women and worshiped their god Baal-peor, enraging God. God tells Moses to impale the ringleaders. Phinehas son of Eleazar spears one of the couples who were in a tent. 24,000 died as a result of their actions. And that is Balak in 60 seconds.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Hukat Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds Today’s portion is from Numbers 19:1-22:1 it is called Hukat which means “decree” God instructs the ritual law and sacrifice of the red heifer to create water of lustration. The cow was to be burned in its entirety and ashes were to be used to create the water of lustration. Touching a corpse of any human being was unclean. This includes entering the tent while occupied by a dead body. After 7 days a person could become clean again. The cow water was then used for cleansing. Failing to cleanse resulted in being kicked out. Miriam kicked the bucket and was buried. The people were thirsty and complained. Moses and Aaron fall on their faces. God shows up and tells Moses speak to the rock for water. Moses in anger yells “Listen, you rebels, shall we get water for you out of this rock?” Moses nun chucks the rock twice and water comes out. Because he failed to obey God’s instruction Moses and Aaron cannot enter the promise land. Doh! Aaron goes up on a mountain and dies and everyone cries for 30 days. The king of Arad picks a fight and loses. The people complain, God let loose serpents that kill many of the Israelites. The People repent and Moses sets up a serpent on a stick that heals the people when they look at it. The Amorites won’t let Israel pass, pick a fight and get destroyed. King Og fights and loses as well. Israelites cross the Jordan from Jericho And that is Hukat in 60 seconds.
